1 Cor 6: 12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

I started smoking when I was 15 years old. This article is not about cigarettes and the evils thereof. If you want to smoke, go ahead and do whatever floats your boat. My point is I started smoking, at a young age, thinking I was only going to smoke for a little while. For sure, I thought I would quit before I suffered in long-term damage. If someone had told me, I would smoke for forty years I would have laughed in his or her face. I was to smart to let cigarettes trap me. Well, Forty years pasted, I finally did quit and as far as I know I don't have any long term damage, like cancer or lung disease but I promise, when I started the habit I was, cross my heart and hope to die, going to quit.

Smoking is just one example of how the world's pleasures, instant gratification, can trap us and take us places, long term pain, we never dreamed we would or could go. If I had the power to go back in time I would have never taken the first cigarette, let alone the first drink, which is another story.

Once upon a time, in the hills of Tennessee, a man and his three sons lived off the land. Most of the time, he and his sons struggled to make ends meet. He planted corn and other vegetables but that just wasn't enough to keep food on the table during the winter months. He hunted and fished but still they came up short of food during the winter.

Wild hogs roamed the hills in this section of Tennessee. However, they were almost impossible to hunt because they were such cleaver animals. They knew when to hide and where to hide. In fact, the hog is one of the smartest animals on earth. Anyway, the man wanted the hogs and he wanted to trapped them not kill them. If he trapped them, he would have them for food any time he and his son's needed them.

One evening after a long hard day tilling the soil, planting water melons, corn, okra, and a bunch of other tasty, southern vegetable, (gosh it makes my mouth water for some good southern fried okra, chicken and black eyed peas) the man and his son's began to devise a plan to catch the wild hogs. One son said, "Why don't we just set out some poison and catch them that way. Dummy that would kill them and how can we eat a dead, poisoned hog. The other son jumped to his feet and yelled out, "I know what we can do."

The father and the other son leaped to their feet out of fear. The yell of the boy scared both of them half to death. "What are you yelling about," The dad roared.

The son said, "Dad we can catch those blasted hogs if we feed them."

"Feed them, "respond his bother.

"Yeah, we start feeding the dang things and while they eat we start building a fence around them."
The dad scratched his head and said, "Well it might work."
The next day the boys placed a bucket full of corn in one of their pastures.
Sure enough several days later the hogs started eating the corn. The Tennessee boys just kept on feeding those hog and slowly building a fence around the hogs.

After several months, over 100 wild hogs were coming to eat the corn the boys had placed for them. In fact, the hogs didn't have to rummage through the forest for food any more. They became totally dependent on the food the farmers supplied for them. What a mistake.

After several months, the dad and his sons completed the fence and the gate was ready to close. One day, when all the hogs started eating, the boys slipped over and closed the gate. They wild hogs who were so hard to hunt and so difficult to catch were now the prisoners of the Tennessee farmers.

This little hog story is a wonderful example of how we can become dependent on "something" which in the end will cause us long term pain. Oh, the hogs didn't have to hunt for food anymore; they did find a way to have instant gratification. However, the cost was more than they wanted to pay. They ended up on the dinner table of the Tennessee mountain boys.

What is the solution$%: How can we avoid the consequences resulting from our search for instant gratification$%: How can we avoid the results of addiction and dependency on something that could kill us$%: The verse of scripture at the top of the page is the answer. The bible tells us all things are lawful. In other words, we can do whatever we want and God still loves us. Boy, am I opening a can of worms. Yes, I believe in once saved always save. Don't get caught up on the doctrine just listen to my point for a second. Yes, we can do anything we choose and God loves us but not all things are profitable. Well, smoking, to much drinking and other things like over eating sure ain't profitable. And, yes I am going to leave ain't in the sentence. Remember all things are lawful even in English. My point is if we do not want to have the addiction of smoking, alcohol etc., don't start. Don't put the things to your lips. I know the hogs never planned to become food for the Tennessee mountain boys. I never planned on smoking for 40 years but I did. If you do not want to be trapped don't start something, (smoking, drinking, adultery, etc.) you might want to stop at a later date.

If you are trapped, like the hogs, and the gate has closed, I suggested you find some help. My help came from the Lord and He worked for me. Today, I am free from addiction and you can be too.
